Book review:
Undergrounder, by J.E. Glass
"I don't need sleep, I need answers" sums up my reading experience. Also: I need a sequel and I need it now 😤
TL;DR review:
I went in expecting a sapphic Beauty and the Beast retelling, but I got so much more (and better!) There was a lot more consent and less "keeping you prisoner", not to mention their romance was allowed to develop organically and over a longer period of time ♥
Longer, more in-depth review:
I truly loved how this story allowed for the characters to explore eachother without the need of having one of them being held captive by the other. There is a lot of mystery going on outside of the romance, allowing for plenty of tension and the need to keep reading.
There were several side-characters I just absolutely LOVED and I laughed my ass off on several occasions because the pure SASS was just omg 🙌
Also... the story really makes you wonder if it's all just weird genetics or actually paranormal/fantasy elements, and I love that a lot ♥ One character in particular had me scratching my head and, damnit, I needed to know more! <just one more chapter it is then...>
I won't spoil it, but damnit: best. character. ever. 🙌 Though honestly, there's another who comes in a close second because of that pure sass 😎
I was also happily surprised by the various disability rep ♥ There is however a paranormal/supernatural spin to some of them, just fyi in case that matters to you.
Final notes:
This is an amazing book. It contains detailed sex scenes and also deals with PTSD. As the blurb already revealed, there's an abduction at the very start that's quite detailed and violent, so be aware of that.
Also not unimportant: this is a series and the ending of this book is a huge cliffhanger. So be warned in case you don't like to wait for the next book (I do highly suggest getting it and just waiting to binge both books the moment book 2 releases 😁)
